Model United Nations is an academic simulation of the United Nations, and a roleplaying activity in which participants step into the shoes of UN delegates and discuss relevant global issues on behalf of their assigned country.

It is also considered a fun and social activity and helps students to

  • better understand the challenge faced by global issues

  • learn about different countries and cultures

  • develop public-speaking and improve confidence

  • make new friends

  • experience parliamentary procedure and a business atmosphere

At a MUN conference, delegates from different schools represent a given country (eg, Ethophia). Different delegates from each country attend different commitees (eg, Human Rights), where topics of a certain category are discussed.

The aim of a commitee is to pass resolutions on its given topics. Resolutions are documents, submitted by delegates, which aim to solve the issues at hand. These detail what action the delegate thinks should be taken to combat the problem. The committee chairs choose a resolution to discuss, and the delegates debate over whether or not they think it is a good resolution.

Awards are given at the end of conferences for individual delegates and for entire delagations who perform to the highest standards.

Delegates wear relatively formal business/office attire with boys wearing full suits, ties and jackets and girls wearing office dresses, skirts, shirts, blouses etc.
